Matching Reducer Speed to Booth Temperature

Reducer speed controls how quickly solvent evaporates out of the paint film, and that evaporation rate needs to match your booth's actual temperature — not the temperature the reducer's label was designed around in general.

Running a fast reducer in a hot booth causes the paint to flash before it has time to level, which shows up as orange peel or dry spray. Running a slow reducer in a cold booth does the opposite — it stays wet too long, increasing the risk of runs and sags.

Most reducer lines offer at least three speed options for exactly this reason. Matching speed to your actual booth conditions, not just the season, is what keeps flash timing consistent year-round.

If your booth temperature swings meaningfully between morning and afternoon jobs, it may be worth keeping more than one reducer speed on hand rather than standardizing on one. Ask your rep which speeds are available for the specific basecoat or clear you're running.
